It’s no wonder that Dallas County High School’s softball team is having so much success.

Rodnesha Vinson and Shayla Griffin, two of the three seniors on the Hornets’ squad, will not be finishing their softball careers this week at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, but instead will continue on to play for Alabama Southern Community College after signing softball scholarships Monday.

“It feels good,” said Griffin. “It feels real good. Alabama Southern just sort of felt like home, and I don’t have to start out big.”

“It will be a different experience,” said Vinson. “I feel like it is a good place to start.”

Alabama Southern coach Elaine Covin expects the two outfielders to come right in and compete for a starting position in the Eagles’ outfield.

“I am real excited,” said Covin. “I am losing my entire outfield and Alabama Southern has a reputation of having an outstanding outfield. They are going to step in and do a real good job out there.”

Covin said that it was a former Hornet who told her about the two star players.

“I was able to watch them over spring break against some weaker competition,” said Covin. “But even then you could see that they were fast. Last weekend I was able to see them against better competition, and could tell they were just as good a players as they were fast.”

Griffin and Vinson will be rooming together in Monroeville, something they are used to because the two are not only teammates, but also cousins.

“It’s going to make it easier,” said Vinson. “We will already know someone who is there.”
