Hammett’s appointment shows governor seeks best possible fit

We are one week away from a change of power in Montgomery, with the transition from one governor to another.
For it being such a dramatic event, the transition between outgoing Gov. Bob Riley and incoming Gov.-elect Robert Bentley, the news has been, well, just like the campaign, uneventful.
But, last week, Bentley made an announcement that should have received much greater coverage than it did, when he named former Alabama Speaker of the House Seth Hammett to lead the Alabama Development Office.
The former Democratic leader will now take over the state’s top economic recruiting position under a Republican governor. What is the world coming to?
Not just that, but Hammett — for many — was considered the best Democratic option for governor just a few years ago. Instead of running for the state’s highest office, Hammett instead continued his efforts in the Capitol and quietly decided to not run for re-election this past cycle.
As the Andalusia Star-News said in an editorial praising the appointment of their hometown legislator, “Hammett knows his way around government and Montgomery politics, and his smooth political style will no doubt play well with industries considering locating in Alabama.”
Hammett’s appointment is a good sign from Bentley, who is working to finish up his appointments ahead of Monday’s inauguration.
The appointment shows Bentley — who has a Republican majority in the House and in the Senate to work with — is still willing to put aside party politics and find the best possible people to go to work for Alabama.
Hammett, in his role as speaker, has been at the forefront of many of Alabama’s biggest economic announcements.
Let’s just hope those announcements continue to come now that he is the man leading the charge for Alabama.
