Orrville to have first Christmas parade

The town of Orrville has never a had a Christmas parade to call its own — until now.
Orrville Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin said she has wanted to do one in the past, but the idea never came to fruition. This year, it did.
“It was an idea that I thought about last year but I didn’t have enough time to put it into action,” Lumpkin said. “This year I started thinking about it earlier, so I was sure we would do it this year.”
The parade is planned for Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.
“For a small town such as Orrville to have our first parade, we are very excited,” Lumpkin said.
Lumpkin said the parade will start at the Orrville Community Center, take a turn down Alabama Highway 22, turn onto Dallas County Road 33 and turn down South Street, where the parade will end up back at the community center.
Lumpkin said Orrville has always participated in other parades and will continue to, but she is glad the town will have one of their own as a new tradition.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’ve got a lot of people that’s coming near and far to participate,” Lumpkin said. “[The community] is so excited. They just can’t wait for the parade. It’s something different in Orrville.”
Lumpkin said the town will have its Christmas tree lighting in downtown Orrville after the parade is over.
Jewel Williamson, who is helping coordinate the parade, said they already have some churches and other organizations signed up.
“We would really like for every entry to be decorated,” Williamson said. “We are trying to celebrate small town Christmas spirit.”
She said she hope to see floats, bands, cars, motorcycles and of course, Santa Claus and his elves parading through Orrville.
“We’re not sure what he is going to be riding on, but we are predicting he may come in from the North Pole and contact the volunteer fire department, and they will take him on the truck” she laughed.
Williamson said people with classic cars, motorcycles or others that want to participate are welcome to participate.
The parade is free to participate in, and anyone interesting in signing up can contact Williamson at 872-0441 or 412-6159.
