The students of Judson College’s opera workshop class will perform scenes from musical theater, opera, and operetta on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
The performance in full staging and costumes will be on the stage of Judson’s historic Alumnae Auditorium in Marion. A reception in Archibald Hall will follow the performance. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Sadie Goodman, assistant professor of music at Judson College, is director of the course.
Student sopranos Blair Carrier and Sarah Green and mezzo-soprano Ana Williams will perform in scenes from Gian-Carlo Menotti’s opera “The Old Maid and the Thief,” Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s musical “Cinderella,” Gilbert’s and Sullivan’s operetta “The Mikado,” and Johann Strauss’s operetta “Die Fledermaus.”
Dr. Bill Bugg, retired professor of voice and opera at Samford University in Birmingham, co-directed several scenes for the performance. Bugg will also perform a scene from Carlisle Floyd’s opera “Susannah” with Goodman, a former student.
Bugg and Goodman have collaborated on various musical projects in the Birmingham area and their duet in Marion is much anticipated.
According to Goodman, “Susanna”h is the most-performed American opera in the world, and the selected scene showcases a “powerful set of arias and duets for soprano and bass-baritone” which “highlights social issues such as domestic violence and mental illness.”
Stacey Parham, chair of the Judson College Humanities and Fine Arts Division, will emcee the event. Accompanists are Jaye Durkin and Cindy St. Clair, head of the music department. All scenes will be in English.
