Multiple gunshots rang out Friday night while Care Ambulance workers responded to a call.
Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the Selma Police Department said the incident is under investigation, and limited details are available at this time.
Ghant said an ambulance responded to an unspecified medical call, and while treating someone, multiple shots were fired.
“Right now we’re still investigating it,” Ghant said. “I was trying to get in touch with someone from over there, but I was unable to get in touch with one of the ambulance guys that drives the vehicle.”
According to an incident report from the Selma Police Department, a call came in from a Care Ambulance worker at 11:13 p.m. on the 1900 block of St. Phillips Street.
“Someone did call for [the ambulance] to come,” Ghant said.
Jamie Lee, area manager for Care Ambulance, confirmed the incident happened, but stated no one was injured. Lee also said the ambulance did not sustain any damage.
“The crew went on a call, and while they were there there were shots fired,” Lee said. “If they were actually trying to hit that truck, I don’t think they would have missed it. I think they were just trying to scare them, but there were shots fired on the call.”
Lee said the shots were not fired from the residence the ambulance responded to.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson alleged the shooting as part of a gang initiation. Jackson said St. Phillips Street has a long history of violence and gang activity. Jackson the street was cleaned up after a raid nearly a decade ago, but gang activity has picked back up recently in the area.
The Selma Police Department could not confirm if the shooting was gang related or not at this time.
