Southside makes 10 3s, but comeback effort comes up short

The Southside Panthers aren’t afraid to shoot the 3-pointer, and they’re pretty good at it too. The team made 10 of them Monday night against R.C. Hatch.
However, Southside would like to stop being forced into positions where it has to start shooting threes. The Panthers fell behind big early and used a barrage of threes to get within striking distance, but Southside ended up losing to R.C. Hatch 75-63.
“It’s the situation. We’re down and we have shoot the 3s,” said Southside coach Lenord Jones. “We’re working on the inside game. Most teams around us don’t have a post game, so we are working on a post game.”
The loss was the third in a row for Southside and the Panthers fell to 3-6 on the season.
Keshawn Arrington made four second half 3-pointers and finished the game 14 points to lead Southside. The Panthers managed to get as close a 10 in the second half, thanks to back to back steals that led to DeQuan Johnson dunks, but there was less than a minute left by that point.
The good news for Southside is that the second half was a much better performance. Jones said the Panthers made adjustments on defense after giving up 41 points in the first half.
“The first half we just slacked on defense. We were in a zone and decided to go to a man the second half, and we got more competitive,” Jones said.
When the Panthers got hot from the outside in the second half, R.C. Hatch (7-1) kept running its offense.
Eight different Bobcats players scored in the game, with Venatris Lipscomb leading the way with 19 points.
This was R.C. Hatch’s fourth win in seven days.
“It’s like a NBA schedule, but it’s good because you want to see the boys play,” said R.C. Hatch coach Homer Davis.
The Panthers also have a busy week. Southside hosts Montevallo Thursday in its first area game and plays at Selma on Friday.
“I’m going to give them a light practice tomorrow and we’ll get prepared the next practice,” Jones said.
Southside 48, R.C. Hatch 36 (Girls)
Christina Watts scored 20 points to lead Southside to a 48-36 win over R.C. Hatch on Monday.
Sharita Benjamin also had 17 points for the Panthers (6-3). Southside plays again on Thursday against Montevallo.
