The Selma Charity League stepped up once again to make sure around 50 children in Selma have a Christmas to remember.

The ladies of the organization got together Tuesday night for their annual Christmas party and brought along gifts that they donated to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree.

“It’s really exciting, especially to do it for our local community,” said Alex Hughey, president of the league. “That’s what the Selma Charity League is all about, is giving back to our community and doing for others.”

Hughey said being able to provide for a child for Christmas is humbling, and it’s something that the league stand for.

“It’s just a great time as the Charity League to give back to our community,”Hughey said. “It’s just our way of making sure that each child receives a Christmas like we would want for our children.”

Hughey said they help different organizations during the year, but they always participate in the Angel Tree each year.

“We like to choose a different organization each month, but December we choose the Salvation Army because they do the Angel Tree each year and there are so many angels,” Hughey said. “The Salvation Army, they do so much for our community. This is just a small way that we can give back to such a great organization.”

Hughey said adopting an angel is something that she has done with her family for a long time, and it’s something she said it’s part of her Christmas traditions.

“My family, even before I joined the charity league, has adopted an angel from the Salvation Army Christmas tree,” Hughey said. “It’s really just fun to continue that tradition now that I have a family and to take my children shopping and help them understand the true meaning of giving and teaching them that it really is better to give than receive.”

Hughey said Christmas is a special time for children and families, and that’s a reason that the league continues to help provide for the kids each year.

“For me it means everything,” Hughey said. “I just remember as a child how much Christmas meant to me.”
