Musician Rick Carter, a Selma native, will hold an album signing Tuesday from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at Queen City Market. Carter’s newest album, ‘Change,’ is his first solo album release in 20 years.

“I’m excited for people to hear it because it has so many different influences on it,” Carter said. “It’s got everything from folk to soul music and everything in-between, so I’m pretty excited for people to hear it. I consider it the album of my career.”

Carter, a 1972 Meadowview Christian School graduate, said he’s excited about making the trip back to Selma Thursday. He currently lives in the Birmingham area.

“I love my hometown,” Carter said. “It’s always great to go back to see my friends.”

Carter was a founding member of the band Telluride in 1977, which was named Birmingham’s Best Band six years in a row. According to the biography on Carter’s website, the band signed a two-year recording contract with RCA Records, which led to Telluride being listed on the Top 100 Billboard Singles Chart with ‘Let me in Tonight’ and ‘Breaking Away.’

When Telluride quit touring, Carter co-founded Rollin’ in the Hay, a renegade bluegrass band. The release of ‘Change’ will coincide with the 35th anniversary release of Telluride’s first album.

Carter has been named “music achiever” by the Alabama Music Hall of Fame three times during his career.

“I never thought about doing anything else,” Carter said. “That’s all I’ve ever done. I’ve been on the road since 1975, and that’s just what I’ve always done. I’ve been very, very, very lucky and very blessed to be able to sustain a career that long and people still find me viable to come see and buy my records.”

Carter will also play a solo performance at Tally Ho on Jan. 5.
