The Selma High School boys’ basketball team spent part of Wednesday afternoon giving out Christmas cards and singing with members of the school’s choir at Warren Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center.

“We’ve got to give back and show people we care about the community… to come back and show them that we love them,” said Saints’ senior Kevin Jones, who sings in the choir and plays on the basketball team. “We want to give them Christmas cheer and show them we can talk to them like regular people.”

Since taking over as the team’s head coach, Ronald Lane has talked to his team about being a family. He said this was part of not only bonding as a team, but reaching out to the community.

“I thought it would be a great thing for our young men and young ladies to see another part of life,” Lane said. They are young in the prime of life but if they if they live long enough and they get up in age like I am, there may be a time where others may need to come visit with you and spend some quality time with you.”

The team brought enough greeting cards for each resident and gave them out at the nursing home’s Christmas party Wednesday. Jones and seven members of the choir sang Christmas carols to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

“These things I think need to make the headlines, about how great some of our kids are in Selma,” Lane said.
