Gallery hopes for big turnout for Art Jam

Gallery 905 usually closes before the sun sets, but next Thursday it’ll be open after dark during the fourth annual Art Jam.
Art Jam, which is put on by the Blackbelt Benefit Group and Main Street Selma, brings local musicians and artists together.
It will be Thursday, Dec. 29 at the Carneal ArtsRevive Building and Gallery 905 right across the street.
“I’m expecting it to be a big turnout,” said Kristen Jones, assistant manager at Gallery 905. “I think Art Jam is always a whole lot of fun, so we’re excited about it.”
The music side of Art Jam will feature Dylan Leblanc and the Pollies, along with special guests VK and Chip Spencer and late addition to the lineup, Paul Garner, who just released an album.
Jones said the gallery closes at 4 p.m. on most days, but on this day it will only be open from 5-7:30 p.m. for Art Jam, giving the gallery a different vibe than it normally has.
“We’ll have a different group of artists bring in their work, and so within the gallery we’ll have a section which is the Art Jam artists, so people can come in and look at that, and the rest of the gallery will be open for people to view,” she said.
The entire gallery will be open, but Jones said there will be a special section just for Art Jam that features music themed art and other unique pieces that aren’t in the normal collection.
“[The art] really varies, but in the past the art has been more fun things kind of music centered or kind of funky and like folk art, just kind of fun pieces,” Jones said.
“What I love about it is that every piece can kind of speak to a person in a different way. It’s the whole beauty of art, so people that aren’t expecting to find something that really speaks to them or that they really love, they may find something.”
Jones said Art Jam also gives new artists or ones that don’t have work in the gallery already a place to showcase their work.
“It’s a good opportunity for artists who maybe aren’t in the gallery or who are just getting started or want to get their stuff out there to just bring it because there is no criteria like we do have within the gallery,” she said.
The gallery opens at 5 p.m., the doors to the Carneal Building open at 6 p.m., and the music starts at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.artjamcarneals.bpt.me or at Gallery 905.
