Morgan Academy senior McKenzie Williams led the Senators to the Alabama Independent School Association quarterfinals this season and her play earned her being named the Times-Journal’s County Volleyball Player of the Year.

Williams was everywhere for the Senators, routinely leading the team in kills. As a senior, she served as one of the team’s leaders and it showed every time she was on the court.

But she also showed her leadership off the court.

“She helped coach the junior high team with me, making sure I was doing everything like I was supposed to,” said Morgan coach Kayla Mason. “If I needed help with anything, whether it was warming the JV up to keeping books for me and the same thing with the varsity team.”

Williams played through a wrist injury during the AISA playoffs and Mason said that showed her toughness and determination to win.

“At the region tournament and the last couple of games, it really stood out, playing through the injury to her wrist to make all-tournament team and again making all-stars and being the west MVP,” Mason said.

Morgan played two home playoff contests, including a region quarterfinal match, but lost to Lee-Scott to see its season end.

Williams went on to play in the AISA All-Star game, where she was named the West team’s MVP.

“Going over there and playing — and the two weeks off since the season ended — made me realize how much I have missed playing volleyball,” Williams said after the game.

“It also opened up a new perspective to me of whether or not I should play further in my career or just go to school.”
