Registration underway for baseball season

It’s not yet 2017, but the Selma Parks and Recreation Department is already trying to prepare for the upcoming baseball and softball season.
The recreation department announced Wednesday that it will begin registration for the new season on Monday, Jan. 9 at the recreation office at Memorial Stadium. The cost to register is $10 and every player must pay that fee, regardless of whether or not they’ve played in past years or not. The registration fee is also non-refundable.
To register a child, parents must bring some form of identification with the date of birth, a $10 fee and have an adult to sign the registration card. The recreation department will also need to know each player’s shirt size.
Parents can register their child without the child present.
Registration will take place Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the recreation office at Memorial Stadium.
Gerald Barron, the city’s baseball and softball director, said starting registration early allows parents plenty of time to get their child signed up. Any child that doesn’t sign up by the tryout date, which will be announced at a later date, will be put on a waiting list.
“If you wait too long after the closing date and that doesn’t give the opportunity for him or her to be drafted,” Barron said. “This gives everybody an opportunity to get their kids out and give them an opportunity to get drafted and get a chance for the coaches to check them out.”
