Winter weather could stay north of Dallas County

Wintry precipitation is still possible Friday for Selma and Dallas County.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham released an updated forecast Wednesday morning and the maps showed Dallas County just outside the projected line of incoming snow and sleet. However, Gary Goggins, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, said that doesn’t mean Dallas County is out of the woods.
Actually, he said there’s still a real chance of winter weather in the area this weekend.
“It’s actually trending a little bit earlier on possible onset of winter [precipitation] and also colder, so if that comes to fruition, we might have a better chance of snow in the Selma, Montgomery, Auburn area, along U.S. 80, the I-85 corridor down there,” Goggins said. “We could see a better chance of some wintry precipt as far south as that. Folks in the Selma and Montgomery areas, I would definitely be aware of the latest forecast because you could definitely be in that area before all is said is done.”
Goggins said there is still a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, but as the weather event gets closer, forecasters will be able to more accurately predict what will happen this weekend.
“There is still a lot of uncertainties in the amount of cold air we have coming down and amounts [of precipitation] at this time,” Goggins said.
Goggins said the weather will arrive between 7 a.m. Friday and noon on Saturday, which is earlier than previously forecast. The low on Friday is still expected to be 28 degrees and it could be even colder than that on Saturday and Sunday.
“We should be above freezing for most of the day on Friday but during the overnight hours we will drop down into the upper 20s for Selma going into the day on Saturday,” Goggins said.
