Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley authorized a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for killing a mother and daughter in a December house fire.
The governor offered the reward through a proclamation, calling for $5,000 to be rewarded for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person that set Katrina and Coleman Moore’s home on fire.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson requested the reward eight days after the deadly fire happened on the corner of Pettus Street and Gary Avenue to help with the investigation.
“I know the family and the citizens of Selma and Dallas County along with myself are very happy the Governor awarded this $5,000,” Jackson said. “This was a very horrific event here in Selma, and hopefully it will come to a quick conclusion.”
Jackson said the police department hasn’t had much luck since the fatal fire, but he hopes the reward will lead to useful information that can lead to an arrest.
“I think it’s going to be very helpful. Sometimes the only way citizens come forward is with a reward,” he said. “So with a $5,000 reward, I would expect information to start coming pretty rapidly.”
The fire happened around 4 a.m. the morning of Dec. 8. Five people were inside the home, including 44-year-old Katrina Moore and her 20-year-old daughter, Coleman Moore.
Katrina, who was on in-home dialysis, was pulled out of the fire, but she died later at the hospital. Coleman, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, died in the fire. The other three people were able to make it out.
Neighbors Lucille Williams and Paul Rivers said they had never seen flames like the ones they saw that morning, and that is because the fire was set on purpose.
An investigation by the State Fire Marshal determined the fire was started intentionally after lab results tested positive for arson.
Interim Selma Police Chief Johnny King said he hopes the reward will entice someone to speak up to bring justice to the Katrina and Coleman’s family.
The city has a reward of up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, and there is also up to $1,000 in rewards for Crime Stoppers.
The police department is asking for anyone with information about the attempted robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-442-7463, the Criminal Investigations Division at 874-2125 or the Secret Witness Line at 874-2190.
