Weather halts local basketball for Friday

There might be snow, but there won’t be any basketball in Selma and Dallas County on Friday evening.
The threat of wintry precipitation resulted in every school in the county closing on Friday, which also meant the cancellation of after school activities and athletic events. Games scheduled at Keith, Meadowview Christian, Selma and Morgan Academy were all cancelled.
Friday evening, when students and fans would be traveling to and from games, could be when the worst of the weather hits Selma and Dallas County, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham. Temperatures are expected to drop throughout Friday and will reach below freezing temperatures Friday night.
Keith boys’ basketball coach Tommy Tisdale said his team was ready to get back on the floor after one of their worst performances of the year Tuesday against Aliceville. The game versus Southside in Orrville was expected to draw a big crowd.
“It’s one of our money games, that’s no secret,” Tisdale said. “Financially, we need it. Honestly we needed it Friday night and I don’t foresee an open Friday after this. I already think it’s going to have on an ulterior day.”
That’s not to say he doesn’t understand why the game was cancelled. Tisdale just also knows how much a county rivalry game means to the school financially.
Tisdale said he’d talk to Southside coach Lenord Jones about trying to get the game rescheduled in the next month. Since it’s not an area game, it doesn’t have to be played, but if it is rescheduled, it’ll have to be played before area tournaments start in early February.
Keith and Dallas County had already decided to reschedule Monday’s game in Plantersville due to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game that night between Alabama and Clemson. The Hornets and Bears will play Wednesday.
With all the changes, Keith will now play four games in five days and three of them are on the road.
Keith will host Demopolis Tuesday, play at Dallas County Wednesday, play at Francis Marion Friday and at Montgomery Academy Saturday.
Morgan Academy’s game against Monroe Academy was also cancelled, but a rescheduled date has already been set for Jan. 23. The Senators were scheduled to play Macon East that night, but that game has been cancelled. The Monroe game is an area game.
Meadowview Christian’s game against Victory Baptist was rescheduled Jan. 12. Selma’s game against Central Tuscaloosa was also postponed Friday, with no makeup date announced.
