Mallory Freine scored 14 points to lead Meadowview Christian to a big area win over Victory Baptist on Thursday night.

The Trojans (5-3) were in control, but struggled from the free throw line in the second half, allowing the Eagles to stick around. Eventually a couple of freebies started to fall and Meadowview was able to pull away for a 38-27 win.

“We missed a lot of free throws and layups but I was proud of the way we fought and played defense,” said Meadowview Christian coach Lebo Jones.

“That was the best team effort we’ve had all year.”

Jones also pointed out Kalee Jones and Erin McIntyre, who combined to score 13 points. Both players also took part in the junior varsity game earlier in the evening.

With the lead going into the fourth quarter, Meadowview slowed the pace and put the ball in Freine’s hands. The Trojans’ spread the floor and ran their offense to get good shots down the stretch.

“They went to man-to-man on us and we spread the floor, put it in Mallory’s hands and she made things happen,” Jones said.

“Nobody can guard her one-on-one in our league, no one can keep her from going to the basket. We set screens and she rolled to the basket and either shot a layup or dished it off.”

Hannah Thornton scored 6 points  for the Trojans.

The Trojans led 22-13 at the half and 28-21 at the end of the third quarter. The win moves Meadowview to 2-2 in area play and in second place behind New Life Christian.

If Meadowview can close area play with two wins over Chilton Christian, Jones said the team is in good position to earn a playoff spot.
