Strong storms possible Thursday and Saturday

Severe weather may impact central Alabama twice this week — Thursday afternoon and then again Saturday night.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has included all of Central Alabama in a limited threat area for the first storm system, which is expected to hit Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. The limited threat brings the possibility of damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour and isolated tornadoes.
“Thursday is going to be a rainy, stormy day and there’s an outside shot of some severe storms on Thursday,” said Jim Westland, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “The real bigger threat we are looking at is over the weekend though, probably late Saturday into possibly early Sunday.”
The weather service has included all of central Alabama under an elevated threat for Saturday, including Dallas County.
The elevated risk means there’s a chance for several rounds of storms, large hail and possibly even isolated tornadoes and damaging winds.
“It’s a threat of severe thunderstorms and a risk of tornadoes as well,” Westland said.
He said the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has said Saturday’s storm systems could be a significant event.
“That’s something we’ve got to be cautious about,” Westland said. “There are several ingredients there and there could be more ingredients that could make this a high impact event. We have to see how things develop between now and then.”
Westland did caution that the forecast is likely to change for Saturday, so everyone should stay tuned.
“It’s got the potential to be a pretty high impact event, it’s not a guarantee, but if it does end up being high impact we want folks to know and have their readiness plan ahead of time and not be caught off guard,” he said.
