A 17-year-old girl is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds after someone fire shots into her home early Wednesday morning.

Captain Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department said dispatch received a call just before 1 a.m. about shots fired into a home on Laredo Court.

“Officers responded, and they found a 17-year-old victim suffering from several gunshot wounds,” he said. “At least one to her chest and at least one to her hand. We’re waiting on the doctors to determine elsewhere.”

Granthum said there were other people inside the home when the shooting happened, but no one else was injured.

“She was actually laying in her bed asleep. The house took on at least five shots,” he said. “There were three people in the house at the time. She was the only one that was struck from a bullet.”

Granthum said the girl’s injuries were life threatening, but she is currently in stable condition. She was treated at Vaughan Regional Medical Center before being transferred to another medical facility.

No arrest has been made, and no witnesses have come forward yet, but investigators did collect evidence that could help link this shooting to others in the area, including one right across the street that happened Wednesday morning too.

“We have collected evidence at the scene which will be sent off to forensics, and hopefully that will paint a better picture of what actually happened,” Granthum said. “We have some evidence for other shootings into an occupied dwelling, and we’re going to see if those came from the same weapon.”

There were no injuries in the shooting across the street from where the 17-year-old was shot, according to Granthum.

Investigators are not sure if the teenager was the intended target, but due to the amount of shots fired into the residence, they believe someone in the house was the intended target.

“We don’t know if it was actually [intended] for her, but there is no doubt due to the number of rounds in this house that it wasn’t a mistake,” he said. “It wasn’t like a stray bullet. There were at least five rounds fired into the house, so we do believe this house was a target.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department at 874-2530 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-442-7463.

Granthum urges anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
