TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Colin Lett didn’t know when he was a student at Selma High School that he would one day be an instructor there too.

But that is exactly what he is, the Selma High School choir instructor.

“It’s been great to start my choral music career here,” Lett said. “This is the place where I came up. There’s so many people that taught me so much, and I’m able to see that transition.”

Lett graduated from Selma High and later received degrees from Morgan State University and Virginia Union University before moving back to Selma.

He is the associate minister of worship at Tabernacle Baptist Church and an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in the Delta Pi Lambda chapter in Selma.

Lett said music is his passion, and it’s a joy to him to be able to work with his students to help them further develop their skills.

“This is what I live for. I enjoy being able to bring out the best in people. So many times, people are timid and they’re shy and they don’t really have a way that they really enjoy expressing themselves, but I can help people find their voice and really shape their voice,” Lett said.

“Music is more than just an art form, it’s really life style, it’s a way of life, it’s a way of thinking.”
