The Selma Community Concert Series is welcoming back the Auburn University Singers to perform at Pickard Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 6.
Andrew Swindle, an officer and section leader for the tenor section of the group and a Selma native, will be performing at home with the group for the last time.
“To me, to be able to come back to Selma, it’s awesome,” Swindle said. “With this being my senior year and it being my last time to come back to perform for my hometown people, it’s really surreal — it’s where I’m from.”
Swindle said he knew from a young age that he wanted to participate in the now 45-year-old group.
“I can remember when I was in elementary school at Morgan Academy and actually getting to go on a field trip and watch the singers perform downtown,” he said.
“I would always just enjoy getting to see them, just wishing that I could be an AU Singer one day when I got to college.”
Now that his dream has come true, Swindle has fallen even more in love with performing and being part of the group.
“People always ask me what it means for me to be an AU Singer … and it’s a really hard question to answer. It’s more of a feeling than it is a job,” Swindle said. “It’s more of a feeling on what you take from it, and what you can give to the group as well.”
According to the group’s website, the AU Singers are made up of 36 vocalists under the direction of Dr. Dale Farmer.
“No matter how many years you’re in the group, if you’re in the group for one year or four years, you’re still a vital member of the AU Singers and you always will be,” Swindle said. “It’s amazing to be part of the singers.”
Swindle said he and the other singers are looking forward to their performance in Selma and visiting the city, along with performing for students during the day.
“On behalf of all the AU Singers, we are so excited to be coming and so honored that we were asked to come perform,” Swindle said. “We enjoy any chance that we get to perform because it’s not just us singing and dancing, it’s actually having fun with each other.
Swindle said tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Carter Drug Company and the Selma and Dallas County Public Library.
The performance will be at Pickard Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
