Four Morgan golfers break 70 in Fort Dale Tournament victory

Last week, Morgan Academy golf coach Ira Wagoner was a bit upset with the Senators’ play. This week the team responded with one of the best efforts he’s ever been a part of.
Four Morgan Academy golfers broke par Tuesday at the Greenville Country Club and the Senators won the Fort Dale Tournament by 82 strokes. The team’s final score was 6-under par.
“I haven’t seen a score like that in 15 years of fooling around with this stuff,” Wagoner said. “It was a very, very good day.”
Gus Colvin shot a 67, or 3-under par, and was the tournament’s medalist. Jones Free, Thomas Morris and David Cothran each shot 69 and Morgan’s final total was 274.
Greyson Harvill also participated in the tournament for Morgan.
“They all shot under par in the 60s, and I’ve never experienced that as a coach, and I don’t think many AISA schools have either,” Wagoner said.
Colvin, Free, Morris and Cothran are all eighth or ninth graders, so this type of victory could be a sign of things to come for Morgan Academy. Wagoner said the team has been hearing about potential for a long time, but may be finally putting it together.
“I think they were a little disappointed in themselves last week,” Wagoner said.
“We’ve tried to work on attitude maybe more than mechanics and it seemed like they were all having a good time today. That usually helps anything you do. If you enjoy it, you usually do a little better.”
The Senators will play again Monday in Troy in their next golf tournament.
“We look to be pretty successful for the rest of the year,” Wagoner said.
