SABRA Sanctuary held its annual auction on Saturday night at the George P. Evans Reception Hall and many from the community took part.
SABRA auctioned off more than 30 items, including a fishing trip in Canada, puppies and a Rototiller donated by Bush Hog. While the auction was the highlight of the evening, the biggest winner of the night was SABRA, which raised money to help victims of domestic violence.
SABRA had to take on more counties a couple of years ago and now serves Dallas, Perry, Wilcox, Marengo, Sumter and Greene, so every single dollar raised is beneficial.
SABRA also gave out awards during the night, including the Roy L. Johnson Exemplary Service Award to chairman of the house and office committee, Doris Duckett.
Domestic violence is a problem all over our country. It’s been brought to light more in recent years due to several high-profile cases involving athletes, but it’s still more prevalent than many of us would choose to believe.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.
SABRA is doing its best to help local victims and thanks to the people who attended Thursday’s auction, they’ll be able to assist a lot of people.
