Monday marked the first day of spring and to a sports fan, that only means one thing — baseball and softball season is on the horizon.
For organizers of the city’s youth baseball and softball league, it means time is running short on getting everything ready before the first games of the year.
Gerald Barron, the city’s baseball and softball director, said that opening day will start Friday, April 7 with games at the Dallas County Sportsplex and Complex. Games will start at 6 p.m. that evening.
Barron was working on setting up all of the schedules on Monday afternoon.
“We have to make sure we get the shirts in, get balls and equipment out to the complex, make sure get scorekeepers, umpires all that kind of stuff,” Barron said.
Any teams that don’t play on April 7 will play be scheduled for Saturday, April 8.
Barron said a small ceremony will be held on the field before the opening day games to announce each player’s name to introduce them to the crowd.
Any child that wants to sign up now would be placed on a waiting list. Registration started in January.
