The Morgan Academy golf team got an early look at the Saugahatchee Country Club Tuesday, site of the 2017 Alabama Independent School Association State Tournament.
The Senators finished second in Tuesday’s tournament at Saugahatchee, which was hosted by Lee-Scott Academy. Morgan finished with a team score of 327, which was well behind Lee-Scott.
“Lee-Scott played really well,” said Morgan coach Ira Wagoner. “They had one guy shoot 66 and one guy shoot 69. We aren’t as far off as we were. We haven’t played well the last two weeks, but we will get there.”
Gus Colvin and Thomas Morris each shot 79, the lowest scores by any Morgan players on Tuesday.
More importantly, Tuesday was a chance for Morgan to get experience playing the course they’ll compete on for the state title April 24-25.
“I think [there was a] lot [to learn],” Wagoner said of Tuesday’s tournament at Saugahtachee.
“Where to hit the ball, where not to hit it, the speed of the greens and the natural slope and the way the ball breaks when they putt. They learned a lot I think.”
Morgan Academy will play in Eufaula at Eufaula Country Club on Thursday.
