Selma High School is doing its part to help incoming freshmen get prepared for the stresses of high school.

The school will hold a summer enrichment program from June 5-July 13 that will include orientation, jump start to algebra and ACT prep. The program will take place from Monday-Thursday and won’t last past 1 p.m. on any day.

Selma High School assistant principal Chimeria Evans said the program is to help incoming freshmen get up to speed before school gets underway in August. She said in the past freshman have had a hard time adjusting.

“We want to help them get comfortable by the time they start school,” Evans said. “They will be familiar with the teachers, where they should go so they can minimize being late to class and also they will be aware of opportunities with extracurricular activities to get them involved.”

The Bridges Orientation Program, which is June 5-8, is the first part of the summer enrichment. It’ll provide basic information such as how to make a smooth transition from middle school to high school and will include fun activities for the students to enjoy. The orientation will last from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

On June 5, the program will jump into ACT prep. It will include field trips related to college selection, career exploration and expectations. Students will participate in lessons on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics and will get instruction in English/language arts, algebra and science.

The ACT prep will last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and run from June 5-June 29. On June 19, the program will start incorporating the third part of the summer program — Jump Start to Algebra — into the curriculum. The algebra program will last from June 19-July 13.

It’ll be a part of the ACT prep courses until June 29, when ACT prep ends. From that point on, the algebra program will last from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day.

The Jump Start to Algebra program will determine each student’s weak areas in math, provide explicit instruction and will include a post-test.

“[Students] really need to take advantage of it,” Evans said. “It’s going to be fun for them.”

Applications for the summer enrichment program are available at Selma High School and must be turned it by May 20.
