Selma City Council President Corey Bowie wants to honor Selma and Dallas County’s veterans by naming a street in their honor.
Bowie is currently looking for streets that would be a fitting “Veterans Boulevard” or similar moniker.
He says he has a couple of streets in mind but wants to get feedback from residents and businesses affected by the change before going public.
“What I basically want to do is find a way to honor the veterans — the price that they paid for us to be free,” Bowie said. “That’s a way to recognize and thank them for the service that they provide for us.”
Bowie said he would follow the city’s ordinance for renaming a street that requires an assessment and meetings with those affected by any change.
Bowie said any street chosen wouldn’t be controversial but he would like a spot chosen that has some ties to veterans if possible — for example, perhaps near the VA Clinic.
“There’s not going to be much of any uproar about it because it’s not controversial,” Bowie said. “I don’t want to be controversial.”
If approved by the city council, Bowie would like to have a dedication ceremony later this year with local veterans.
“We would invite all the veterans out and pay homage,” Bowie said.
Bowie said he would also try to raise funds for some kind of monument or memorial to place on the street as well. He said the idea for a street came from a conference the city sponsored last year with the VA.
