A 35-year-old Selma man wanted for attempted murder has turned himself in to Selma police.

Lt. Tory Neely with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Selma Police Department said Khari Varner turned himself in at the police department Monday morning after being wanted for more than 10 days.

“He came in and turned himself in earlier this morning,” Neely said Monday.

Neely said the shooting happened on Aug. 17 around 5 p.m. on the 100 block of U.S. Highway 80 just across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selmont in front of a mechanic shop.

“They’ve been arguing with each other back and forth. The victim came over toward the business, and they got into arguing with each other,” Neely said. “Varner pulled out a handgun and started shooting and shot the guy in the back.”

Neely said the victim was struck once in the back, and the bullet exited through the pelvic area. Neely said the victim was listed as being in serious condition in an update last week.

Neely said Khari and the victim were acquaintances. Varner is being held at the Dallas County Jail without bond.
