Have commercial drivers license, will coach

This item popped up toward the end of the Selma School Board work session Tuesday night: Selma coaches, who want to keep coaching, have to have a commercial drivers license.

The coaches received notice of the new requirement through a memo.

School superintendent Donald Jefferson said it’s the school system’s call and the coaches services are needed to drive buses to save money.

School board member Brenda Obamanu said the memo had caused some consternation with some coaches, although she didn’t publicly name names.

“it frustrates our coaches,” she said. “Are they gonna have to drive and what the children, too?”

Jefferson said he’s trying to do whatever he can to save money.
