Southside secured a rare playoff berth with an 8-7 win over Greensboro on Monday.
The newfound success comes after a two-year absence from the diamond.
“It was history in the making,” said Southside coach LaMorris Jones. “A lot of people thought we couldn’t do it.”
Trailing 6-4 in the fifth inning, the Panthers scored four runs to take the lead for good. Wilbert McConcio doubled to score Devin Maguire, and Antaris Smith swung on a called suicide squeeze to single and score McConico.
A Michael Perryman single pushed Smith across for the go-ahead run and LaQuentin Gunn singled to score Perryman for insurance.
Mario Oliver went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored, Jamal Dudley finished 1-for-3 with a single and two runs and McConico was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Smith ended the night 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored and Gunn went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
