The Ellwood Christian Academy girls basketball team ended a losing streak that spanned over three seasons this past Friday with a 22-20 win over Maplesville.
The last time the Lady Eagles won a game was against Maplesville on Jan. 17, 2014, when they won 40-36. The team only won two games that season.
This was the first win for any of the girls on the Lady Eagles’ roster. According to head coach Nathaniel Brown, the whole gym was excited to see the girls break their losing streak.
They also managed to pull off the win during the second to last game of the season.
“It meant a whole lot,” Brown said. “It’s like winning the world championship. They really came together and played.”
Arianna Withers and Shakeria White both led the team with six points each.
The defense held Maplesville to five points in the first quarter, eight point in the second, four points in the third and five in the fourth quarter.
“I’ve never seen them play like that,” Brown said. “They looked like a basketball team. The girls were jubilant. Everyone came out of the stands, and it was like they won the world championship.”
Rev. Gary Crum was proud of his student athletes accomplishment because he knows what they’ve been through over the last few seasons.
“I saw a glare in each of the girls eye’s that I hadn’t seen before,” Crum said. “It takes a tremendous amount of effort to keep showing up to practice and games. Day after day, game after game and year after year in search of a victory. They never quit so they’re all MVP’s to me.”
Even though it was the teams’ only win this season, the victory broke a streak of 60 consecutive losses.
The girls faced Isabella on Monday night, and can be proud of the fact that for the 2017-2018 season they will not be winless.
