The top federal prosecutor in Alabama’s Southern District is stepping down this month.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Rhodes said in a statement Friday she plans to leave her position on April 17.

Rhodes has served in the post since 2005 when she replaced David York. She was formally appointed to the job in 2006 by former President George Bush.

In January, the Democratic Party’s Alabama Presidential Advisory Council recommended Barrown Lankster as its choice for U.S. attorney in Mobile. A panel formed by U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham recommended Vicki Davis as its first choice.
