The YMCA of Selma-Dallas County is introducing a new 3-on-3 youth girls basketball league this spring.
The new league will consist of three divisions for girls in kindergarten through second grade, third through fourth graders and fifth through sixth graders. Registration opened on Monday, March 5 and will remain open through Saturday, March 31. It will cost $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
According to program director Chase Morris, the Y didn’t have any programs setup specifically for girls, so they wanted to try something new to get them involved.
“We just wanted to get this going to see if it sticks with the community,” he said. “This way some girls can have a separate league besides our youth basketball league.”
The co-ed youth basketball league, which is already underway, has less than ten girls in it. The goal of the 3-on-3 league is to encourage more girls to come out and play.
“We thought that if we targeted just the girls, then maybe we’d get more girls to come out,” Morris said.
Practices will start in early April, and there’s a coaches meeting scheduled for Monday, April 9 at 7 p.m. Games are scheduled to begin the week of April 23 with games being held on Thursdays.
The girls will receive additional help and instruction from former Concordia College Alabama women’s basketball player Shuntavia Harris. Harris was a first team United States Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Division I All-American for the 2015-2016 season and a second-team All-American in 2017-2018 during her senior season.
“Our intern, who was an All-American at Concordia, is going to be helping out all the teams during practices,” Morris said. “[Harris] had an excellent basketball career, and we thought that it would mean a lot to the girls if they saw someone who has excelled at the next level.”
