Spring is here and birds are here to stay, so the Selma High School chapter of National FFA Organization, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, has a plan to keep those birds safe and sheltered.

National FFA is a student organization with community service as one of its primary focuses. Advisor for the Selma High School chapter, George Pullom, said through their partnership with the local Tractor Supply Company, they are in the process of donating a variety of birdfeeders to people in the community.

He said they have more than 70 birdfeeders left to donate and have made address planters to donate as well.

“We’re just trying to give back to the community,” he said.

They are giving the houses away based on need and because of the amount of birdfeeders left, they will now be a on a first come, first serve basis.

The organization has also served the community through acts of service such as the dog wash, building benches and making gift baskets for the Lighthouse Nursing Home during Christmas.

“We learn by doing, and we live to serve,” he said.

Through this service effort, they are providing homes for birds in different areas and sending a message to the community about the importance of service.

“We need to protect the environment and having a place for a bird to go feed protects the bird population,” he said.
