Another mudbug party is coming to town.

This time, the people will be the judge as teams gear up for the second annual Crawfish Cookoff.

The cookoff benefits the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department. Jane Harris, cookoff coordinator, says she is excited to be planning the fundraiser once again.

Registration and the crawfish are included in the $100 entry fee required of every team.

However, teams are responsible for bringing their own seasonings.

Each team of three will line up and put their best spices forward and prepare to throwdown at the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department, located at 106 Main Street in Valley Grande.

The competition is Saturday, April 21 from 3-8 p.m.

As time draws near, teams are still being accepted and tickets for admission are still on sale.

The admission fee is $5 for adults and free for children up to 10 years old.

Tickets are $20 for four scoops of crawfish and $35 for all you can eat.

Harris said last year’s turn out was overwhelming and they raised a lot of money for the fire department. The response was so great they decided to do it again.

“Last year we raised about $3,200,” she said.

There will be no judges this year, as the community members will play judge.

They will taste each team’s crawfish and vote for the People’s Choice.

Harris said this is a great way to involve the community in the fundraiser.

“They will put their tickets in the bucket and then they’ll decide who’s the winner of the Crawfish cookoff,” she said.

They plan to make the event annual and fundraisers like this one helps the fire department raise the funds needed to operate successfully.

“They get low funding and the funding they do [get] they use it to the best of their abilities,” she said.

“This is just to aid them in things they might need in the future or need right now.”

Not only will there be some hot spices that day, there will also be live tunes.

“It’s gonna be just a fun laid back time,” she said.
