The Selma-Dallas County Public Library will be hosting “Bingo Fun!,” a bingo event for children ages 5 and up, as a part of the seven-week Sensational Selma Summer 2018 program, starting Friday, June 8 at 10 a.m.

This form of bingo follows the same rules as traditional bingo; however, it has a greater emphasis on education and is designed to promote fun, learning and fellowship for children.

“Bingo Fun!” will use words and numbers and have the participating children match what is called out with what is on their board.

There are two programs, with one occurring at 10 a.m., while the other begins at 2 p.m. Each program lasts for 30 minutes.

Prizes will be given to winners.

Becky Nichols, Selma-Dallas County public library director, said she is thrilled to be having the bingo event as well as the Sensational Selma Summer program.

“I just have a wonderful time in the summer,” Nichols said. “I have a wonderful time year-round, but, in the summer, it is just a neat, fun way to end another great week at the library. This week we kicked off with the magic show and we had over 200 people. Puppet shows on Tuesday. We have arts and crafts and the petting zoo, so bingo kind of wraps up the week, then we kick off another week.”

According to Nichols, last year, the bingo activity alone, garnered many parents and participants.

“They [the children] love it,” Nichols said. “Last year we had standing room, but some people couldn’t get into the 10 a.m. so they had to come back at 2 p.m.”

Bingo is a favorite amongst the library staff as well, according to Nichols.

Nichols encourages many children to participate, however, there is limited seating, with 35 kids being the limit.

All of the library staff will be over the program, and will rotate between sessions.

Nichols views the summer of activities to be a great learning and entertaining experience for children, and sees the library as the perfect place for it.

“The library is such a fantastic place to bring children because they get a chance to enjoy learning, fun and fellowship all at the same time, and all right here in Selma, Alabama, and best of all for free,” Nichols said.

The seven-week Sensational Selma Summer 2018 program is from June 4 to July 20.

“Bingo Fun!” will be every Friday.
