Walking along the beach during her travels is one of June Sullivan’s favorite things to do. She also loves crossroad puzzles and gardening. However, she lives her life by caring for and making others feel special.

As a Vaughan Regional Auxiliary member, affectionately called “Pink Ladies”, for more than seven years Sullivan has put in her fair share of volunteer hours. The organization is a volunteer entity of the Vaughan Regional Medical Center, and Sullivan serves as the co-president of the auxiliary and manager of the hospital’s gift shop. The pink ladies deliver flowers to patients’ rooms, direct visitors and/or patients to the correct floor, deliver reports to various departments and greet people as they enter the lobby of the hospital.

“You try to make things more pleasant, not only for the patient, but for the families that could be going through the most traumatic time of their lives,” Sullivan said.

Not only does the organization volunteer within the hospital, it makes a difference in the lives of local students each year. The proceeds from the hospital’s gift shop benefit those causes.

“Each year we give a scholarship to qualified individuals,” Sullivan said. “This year we gave four or five scholarships that total for about $8,000.”

The funds also benefit the needs of the hospital as well.

“Last year, we bought new furniture for the waiting room,” she said.

Even with all of these responsibilities on her plate as co-president and manager, Sullivan still sees this big picture, and is grateful for it all.

“It makes me feel good to try to lessen their load,” she said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Kay Davidson, director of volunteer services, believes Sullivan is a great addition to the auxiliary family and is happy to work with her.

“She has always been very personable, very willing to help and always willing to go the extra mile to lend a helping hand,” she said.

Davidson said Sullivan is doing a great job. She said her thoughtfulness and cheerful attitude has not only made fellow auxiliary members love her, but other staff as well.
