The Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation is hosting its annual Kingian Nonviolence Train the Trainer, Summer Institute 2018. The center’s executive director Ainka Jackson said the trainings are a way to teach people how to resolve issues without resorting to violence.

“With all of the violence and all the conflict that we have in the city, and quite honestly in the country, it’s necessary that we better know how to reconcile conflict,” she said.

There is no fee for Selma residents to attend, but there is a $450 cost for non-residents.  The trainings will be June 24- June 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation located at 8 Mulberry Road. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, June 25.

The first two-days is the (CORE, conflict reconciliation) training course. During those two days, “A Force More Powerful” and “Selma: The Bridge and the Ballot” documentaries will be shown in the evenings as a part of the training. Breakfast and lunch are included each day.

Founded in 2015 by Civil Rights Leader Dr. Bernard LaFayette, the center’s mission is to combat violence through education.

“The nonviolence trainings teaches people about the philosophy of Dr. King, and how he arrived at the principles of non-violence,” Jackson said. “[They also show] how to deal with conflict, because it’s inevitable, and how we can be guided by the principles and steps of non-violence.”

At the end of the five-day training, all participants that completed all five days will receive a Level 1 trainer certification in the subject.

“Our hope is that our local participants, as well as non-local, can use this training to develop skills to combat violence in all its forms, from internal violence of the spirit to interpersonal and structural violence,” Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation
