The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) releases an annual report listing the schools that were penalized with fines and ejections, and Selma High and Southside High School made it through the 2017-2018 school year without any penalties.

Selma High and Southside were two of 75 schools that will be recognized for this accomplishment at the AHSAA Summer Conference Sportsmanship Banquet at the Renaissance Montgomery Convention Center in Montgomery on July 20.

At the 2017 banquet, 108 schools were recognized. Despite the decline in total schools, Selma and Southside still made the cut. This is the second year in a row Selma High completed the year without fines, ejections or penalties.

Violations ranged from unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and ineligible student athletes to school audits and coaches failure to attend rules clinics. Fines ranged from $50 to $1,100 depending on the violation.

This year, Keith High, Dallas County High School and Ellwood Christian Academy were the three local AHSAA schools that received at least one penalty.

Keith, which was one the schools with no violations for the 2016-2017 year, only had one violation. A $250 fine resulting from a school audit on Nov. 11, 2017.

Dallas County had two penalties from the past school year. A $300 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct at a football game on Oct. 2, 2017, and a $250 fine resulting from a school audit on Nov. 15, 2017.

Ellwood Christian Academy racked up the most violations (9), six of which resulted from a Dec. 20 basketball game where six players were ejected for leaving the bench. The school was fined $100 for each infraction.

ECA also had a $250 fine from an audit on Nov. 15, 2017, and two $300 fines for the track and field coach not attending a rules clinic. The school was fined once for the boys program and again for the girls program. ECA totaled $1,450 in AHSAA fines for this past academic year.
