Community members joined at the R.B. Hudson courtyard to build the foundation for what will be the new home for raised gardens at the school. William Henry said he started the garden as a project for his membership in the local Eagle Scouts.

“To become an Eagle Scout each person has to do a project that benefits the community,” he said.

He said the inspiration to do a garden came from one of the school’s teachers.

“It started because I go to church with Ms. Anne Williamson, who’s a teacher at R.B. Hudson, and she brought up the idea to me,” Henry said. “From there I kind of took it and planned out how we were gonna do it.”

Henry said the gardens offer great promise for the future gardeners at the middle school.

“The school has a gardening class, but now they will have something they can constantly grow things in,” Henry said.

He said although the garden is his project, he will be helping out in the beginning and will gradually release the responsibilities to the school.

“I’m gonna come out here for the next three months, at least twice a month, to make sure that they’re still good and that they don’t need anything,” he said. “After that the gardening teacher and her students will take care of the gardens and be in charge.”

According to Henry the R.B. Hudson staff couldn’t be happier with their new addition.

“Well the principal was out here this morning, she opened the school for us,” he said. “She’s very excited for it, and so is the garden teacher.”
