After closing her first store due to a tragic loss, Genesis Boutique owner, Shequavia Johnson said she has now re-opened her business in a new location and is ready to see what God has in store for her. The store is now located at 1110 Alabama Ave.
“I prayed and fasted, trying to figure out my purpose in life,” Johnson said. “One day I was at Sears in Hoover, and I said ‘OK God this is not what you put me here to do.’”
Johnson said the signs were all there for her to not try to re-open a business at this time, but after a reassuring lesson from her pastor, she knew this was the right decision.
“One day at Bible study I heard my bishop say, ‘Don’t let what you don’t have stop you from doing what you want to do,’” Johnson said.
She said after listening to the word from her pastor, she found the building, applied for a loan and was opening the boutique doors all within two months.
The store means so much more to Johnson than just being a business. It symbolizes a fresh start and new beginnings.
“I feel like this is tied to my purpose in life,” she said. “I named it Genesis, because I feel like God gave me this as my beginning.”
Johnson even includes her faith and love for God within her business.
“On every receipt, I have John 3:16 on it,” she said. “There’s always gonna be a message here that I can give somebody, even if I don’t say anything verbally. You don’t know how that can affect someone at the end of the day.”
Johnson said she will continue to promote positivity through her business, and she hopes her clothing offers a fun, classy, style for young adults. She said she is happy to re-open right here in her hometown, but she eventually wants the brand to expand.
“My plan is to grow my business,” she said. “I want to see Genesis Boutiques all over the world.”
The store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
