This weekend is going to be a busy one. Between a school supply giveaway, a golf championship, 5K, and food trucks, Selma is going to be a busy city this Saturday. Who said small towns didn’t have anything to do on the weekends? No matter your interests there is something going on that is sure to get you off of the sofa and into the city.

Community members have been planning and collecting school supplies over the course of a few months. This Saturday, at noon, local students will have the opportunity to gather much needed school supplies from St. Paul Community Methodist Church located at 826 Choctaw Avenue. This week alone there have been at least three school supply giveaways that I know of and I am proud to say there are people here in the city making sure every child has the necessary tools to succeed in the classroom this year.

The Selma Country Club Golf Championship will be off to an early start both Saturday as well as Sunday. Starting at 8:30 a.m., on both days, there will be several divisions to look out for. There is a junior, senior, ladies and a men’s division all playing for different prizes. I know nothing about golf, but it seems like this event adds a fun way for locals to enjoy their weekend.

Another fun activity that will be happening right across the street from the Golf Championship is the Selma City School’s Aim for Excellence 5K run/walk at Bloch Park. I love cardio, so this type of event is right up my alley. The run starts at 7:30 a.m. and is both fun and a good source of exercise.

Last but certainly not least, at least on my agenda, are the food trucks. There will be at least three food trucks lined down Water Avenue from noon until 3 p.m. Unlike the other events mentioned, the food trucks are going to be a continuous effort of the Black Belt Benefit Group to promote local food truck businesses.

I couldn’t be happier because food trucks are my favorite and food truck events hold an even more special place in my heart. These types of events allow you to taste different types of foods from different vendors all in one setting, and let me tell you…it is usually AMAZING!

This event also keeps money flowing into Selma’s economy by promoting local businesses, and if you’ve read my columns before you know I am all for anything that will help Selma continue to grow. Overall, this weekend is full of fun and positive family events.
