Tourist will have the opportunity to walk through the more obscure parts of Cahawba’s history during the True Crime Walking Tour of Old Cahawba on Aug. 4 at 10-11 a.m. at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park in Orrville.

The True Crime Walking Tour will focus on stories that describe Cahawba’s criminal element.

Being the state’s capitol during the 1800s, Cahawba is now a historic site operated by the Historical Commission.

Assistant site director Jonathan Matthews is enthusiastic about the tour and is excited that participants will be informed on smaller facets of Cahawba’s history

“I think the tour is great,” Matthews said. “Any chance I have to express my enthusiasm for Cahawba is wonderful. Fortunately, the visitors who come to Cahawba are really excited about the history too. I think it will give people a new perspective on Cahawba. Everyone knows Cahawba as the first state capitol, and usually focus on the prosperity of, but sometimes we don’t highlight the lesser-known stories. So I think that the tour will allow people to learn something new that they didn’t know before.”

Cahawba holds guided tours nearly every month. They specialize in walking, biking and wagon tours, all of which focuses on different aspects of Cahawba’s history such as Cahawba’s cemetery, African American history and Civil War history.

The tour is $8 per person and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking footwear.
