The first day of school is right around the corner and the Selma City School System ran off some steam on Saturday morning.
Community members joined teachers and administrators at Bloch Park Saturday for the Aim for Excellence 5K and the one-mile fun run fundraiser for the Selma City School System.
Selma City Schools superintendent, Dr. Avis Williams, said the event was a success and it was a great way to get people in the community up and active.
“Our goal was to start the back to school weekend off with something healthy and fun and family friendly,” she said. “We had a 5K competition race and a fun run.”
More than 100 people showed up to the event, and Dr. Williams said she was not only happy to see support from her staff, but from the community members as well.
“Many of our principals attended, families, and we even had a couple of stroller joggers out there,” she said.
The proceeds raised during the event will benefit the city schools. Williams said this was a way to earn additional money for the schools.
“If we have schools that are having special events and need some additional funding this would be there to support our teachers and our schools,” she said.
Williams said the event was a great way to get out and be active while participating in a worthy cause.
“I think the health and fitness piece is extremely important, and if you can raise money for a good cause while being fit and healthy and bringing people together then I think it’s a win win,” she said.
