Co-Sponsors McRae-Gaines Learning Center, Taylor Internal Medicine and the Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held their final update and promotions rally for the 6th annual Get Fit Selma! 2018 Health and Fitness Festival at The Coffee Shoppe Monday evening.
The purpose of the event was to distribute promotional materials residents and event organizers while updating them on the latest additions and details.
Event organizer, Stephanie Hamm said the event planning is still underway, but there is one key part missing: the volunteers.
“Over 50 volunteers will be needed to put on a successful Get Fit Selma!,” Hamm said.
Hamm said with the jam-packed schedule, the volunteers will be needed to provide the necessary help on the day of the event. She spoke to the group about the new additions to the event and updated them on the things already on the agenda.
Defeat Diabetes 5K Run and Walk, health screenings, information about local, regional and national health resources are just some of the activities going on during the event.
A recent addition to the event is the Birmingham VA Screening RV, courtesy of the Selma VA Outreach Clinic.
The day will be off to an early start at Wallace Community College Selma on Saturday, Oct. 20 as participants prepare to run and walk for their health in the diabetes run.
Registration for the run and walk will begin at 7 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Hamm said registration is just one more thing that needs the extra hands.
Not only are the organizers seeking volunteers, they are also looking for businesses that are interested in setting up a booth during the event. Hamm said this is not a time to recruit employees, but a time for businesses to provide valuable information to the community.
“We are interested in getting local businesses who are focused health and wellness to come,” Hamm said.
There is a $35 fee for each business.
