Lite the Block two-day citywide youth and young adult empowerment will be held at the School of Discovery Thursday, Aug. 23at 6: 30 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
The event is sponsored by Kingdom Talk Ministries, an organization that has gained national and international attention for their commitment to the community.
Angela Fincher, president and CEO of Kingdom Talk Ministries said the agenda will address the crimes in the city and county that are committed by young people and attempt to redirect the youth to a more positive path of life.
“The reason we’re having this event is to raise the awareness and moral of our young people,” she said. “We try to get them to stop the violence and stay in school. Those are the reasons why we host the event.”
This purpose of the event is to raise the morale of local youth, specifically young males.
Fincher said her selection of guest speakers was purposeful, because they are two young men that grew up in Selma and can relate to the things that a lot of the youth in the city are going through. The guest speakers for the event will be ministers Nathan Snow and George Burton.
“Our need in this city is mainly toward young men,” she said. “That’s the greatest need in our city. That’s why we chose these speakers because they have been in the school system and have walked in their shoes.”
Fincher said without the constant support of community leaders and residents, events like this wouldn’t be a success and she is grateful for the constant support she has received.
“I want to thank the Selma City Council for their years of support,” she said. “I also want to thank the Selma City Schools and send a special thanks to Cicely Curtis Walters, principal of School of Discovery.”
