The brotherhood and comradery of the Selma Fire and Rescue Department are two things that

Joshua Favor holds dear to his heart.

After starting with the department over a year ago, Favor has not regretted his decision.

“Just being a part of the actual brotherhood of the fire department and having the pride of being a fire fighter is the most rewarding part [of being a firefighter],” he said.

Favor comes from a family with a long history of helping the community. Although he chose a different path of helping others, he still looks up to his family’s service.

“All of my family are police officers,” he said. “My dad, my brother and my uncle are all cops in Montgomery. I just wanted to take a bit of a different route.”

Helping people and saving lives is the fire fighter’s ultimate goal. However, according to Favor, sometimes there is nothing they can do to help.

“Not being able to help somebody that needs to be helped is probably the hardest part [about being a firefighter],” he said.

Favor said the dangers of the job causes the team to bond because of the necessary brotherhood that is needed to have each other’s backs.

“We’re always looking out for each other,” he said. “Everything is done in groups of two. You always have someone looking after you at all times.”

Knowing that he works with people that look out for him, and vice versa, adds a certain level of comfort to the job for Favor.

“It’s a comforting thing to know you’ve got somebody looking after you at all times and that you’re also there for someone else,” he said.

When he is not fighting fires and saving lives, Favor enjoys being outdoors with his wife and other family members.
