The Ellwood Christian Academy Eagles were shutout in their season opener on the road at Beulah 36-0.

The Beulah Bobcats scored early and didn’t let the Eagles back in the game.

“They were just as good as we thought they would be,” Ellwood Christian head coach Migeual Catlin said. “They had a strong running game, and did a good job on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.”

The Eagles had glimpses of success, but it wasn’t enough to put a dent into the score.

Eagles receiver Justin Bufford caught two passes for 160 yards in the game. A welcome stat line for a new player on the team.

“We had good drives and some not so good drives,” Catlin said. “We competed well, especially with a short roster.”

The Eagles return home next week for a region game against Holy Spirit.

“I thought we did OK,” Catlin said. “We didn’t do as good as we wanted to do, but I felt like we did get a little better in a couple areas.”

Dallas County

The Dallas County Hornets lost its first game of the season 20-0 to the McAdory Yellow Jackets on Friday night in McCalla.

The game didn’t make it to halftime, as thunderstorms forced the referees to end the game at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets three scores came on a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown and a fumble recovery return.

Dallas County’s head football coach Zeke Pigg didn’t get the result he wanted in his debut, but the team is still working on improving.

“At the end of the day, we have to get tougher mentally and physically,” he said. “There was some positives, and there is still a lot of negatives. A lot of the negatives we can cleanup.”

The Hornets have their first home game of the season on Sept. 7, and it’s a region game against Montevallo.

“My message to my players was that they can’t hang their heads,” Pigg said. “We start region play. Every game counts, but these are the ones that count for all the marbles.”
