Participation matters – Everyone should attend Stop The Gun Violence rally

Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas is leading the resistance today with a Take Back our Ward event at noon at Selma University, and all of the city is invited, not just Ward 7.

“We’ve decided to take back our Ward,” Thomas said. “The kids are worried about the violence. We have children and elderly living in my Ward. We don’t want to get any more people killed in our ward.”

Thomas said gun violence will be the topic of the event.

“We’re bringing the families out to talk about gun violence,” Thomas said. “Having a gun isn’t the way to be. Their lives are taken away because of guns.”

Thomas has invited the entire Queen City to come together and unite against gun violence.

“This isn’t just about Ward 7, it’s about the whole community of Selma,” Thomas said.

These events can be only as effective as the turnout to hear and participate in the message and the anti-violence movement that is trying to start.

We encourage everyone who has ever said they wanted change in the city to attend this event. There are only so many times that people can talk about change before something has to happen.

This event could be that.

Nothing can change until we do, and the time is coming with 11 deaths in the county this year, it is past time to make a change.
