Mark Anthony Cleveland has been charged with murder and possession of marijuana first degree in connection with the shooting death of Peter Hatcher.

Hatcher, who was 54, was shot Tuesday night between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m., according to Selma Police Department Lt. Mike Harris.

He was transported to Baptist Hospital in Montgomery, where he died of his injuries around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Harris said Cleveland was taken into custody, questioned and charged late Wednesday afternoon.

Harris said the department believes the shooting occurred following an argument over narcotics.

“From what we can tell from the preliminary investigation the shooting is drug-related,” Harris said.

Cleveland is being held without bond at the Dallas County Jail. Authorities are still searching for the weapon, which they believe was a handgun.
