AKA hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Zeta Eta Omega Chapter hosted its “Early Detection is a Serious Matter” Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar on Monday.
The event was in observance of the organization’s national Impact Day.
Event chair Edna Montgomery said the seminar’s purpose is to inform the community of the importance of checking for breast cancer.
“We want to increase the awareness of breast cancer in terms of prevalence and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.” Montgomery said. “To make an impact means to make a difference, and that is indeed what Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority wants to do through service.”
Guests joined the sorority at the Ivy and Pearl Service Center as they fellowshipped and then listened to Dr. William Stevens speak about breast cancer awareness and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
The crowd was also able to ask Stevens questions during his presentation.
Anetrial King of the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection Program with the Rural Health Medical Program also spoke to the audience about the disease.
Montgomery said this event was one of the many way AKA services the community.
“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has several days throughout the year in which they focus on a particular topic,” she said. “Today, October 1st is Breast Cancer the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month, thus our impact today is on breast cancer.”
